Best Western Hostellerie Du Vallon Review

The Best Western Hostellerie Du Vallon is located at 12 Rue Sylvestre Lasserre in Trouville, France in the heart of Normandy. It is short walk to the boardwalk area where there are many shops and restaurants and a 15 minute walk to the center of Deauville (the cities are side by side with harbors in each city). It is not however, easy to find. Luckily on our way there we figured out the GPS and found the hotel after our second go round thru Trouville.

The hotel is a typical Best Western in Europe. Meaning it is certainly not a luxurious property but is clean & charming and very basic. The exterior is striking with typical French Normandy style architecture (looks like a large Tudor home) and includes a small parking lot. Check-in was relatively easy. I think there is only 1 person working the front desk so if there were a few people checking in or out at once there could be a wait, She was relatively friendly and answered the few questions we had (she spoke English and I think German too). She also informed us that the Internet was down for the moment. This was ok to a point as we were driving to Colleville sur Mer and wanted to leave quickly (but I also wanted to check on-line to see what the best route was). The lobby area is large with many red checked upholstered chairs.

The room was decent size. Painted and accented in a purple theme and consisted of a small desk, small TV, luggage stand, closet, & a queen size bed. The bathroom was good size and had a bath tub with removable shower head. There was supposed to be a coffee/tea maker in room, but ours did not have one (or we could not find it and of course my wife wanted a cup of coffee that evening). The room also had a balcony that overlooked the neighborhood. The bed was not the most comfortable and the linens were not the most luxurious, but we did have a good night sleep.

The hotel does have an indoor pool and a fitness room. It also has a very charming cocktail area (with a nice fireplace) that  doubles as a billiards room and library (where we went for her evening cup of coffee). They say they have room service, but I did not see a restaurant. They do have a breakfast area, but I do not think it serves food any other time of the day. Breakfast was ok. The quality is not the same as say the Hilton, but was good none the less. They had a small hot tray of scrambled eggs and sausages (was almost empty and looked like it had been there for a while). Some breads and rolls (although most were gone by the time we arrived). A few meats and cheeses. Yogurt & cereal. But what I enjoyed most was the bowl of oranges and a juice squeezer to make fresh orange juice (me and my orange juice again).

Overall the Best Western Hostellerie Du Vallon is exactly what I thought it would be. A Best Western. A reliable hotel with clean basic rooms that had the feel of a motel more than a hotel. It is in a great location. Walking distance to town but in a quite neighborhood. Very close to the D-Day beaches. Colleville sur Mer (where the American Cemetery is located) is about a 2 hour drive via the coast road (Sword, Juno, and Gold Beaches are all on the way) and about an hour back via the toll road. Honfleur (which is even more scenic than Trouville or Deauville) is about a 20 minute drive the other direction (NE). The hotel did provide free wifi (Internet did come back on by the evening, but speed was a little slow) and free parking. Breakfast was included in our room rate (there was a little lower rate that did not include breakfast), but I must say we only paid 9 euros less for this night than we did the prior night at the Trianon Palace in Versailles (which is a luxury property). So I can not say this hotel was a great value (neither was the cup of coffee my wife had. It was billed to our room and cost 4 Euros) but all in all I would say we enjoyed our stay.
